This project is part of the Geodetic Project Course (GPC) 2019, organized by the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry, ETH Zurich. We aim to study the two areas located in Ova Spin (Graubünden, Switzerland). Firstly, the trenches from World War 1 (WWI), and secondly, a cave from neolithic era, which is also called "Abri", located near Ova Spin. The primary goal of this project is to study and realize a geo-referenced 3D model of both areas.
Ova Spin was a conflict zone during WWI and WWII. In WWI, this Alpine pass was near the frontier with Italy and the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, thus the need to fortify the border eventually led to the creation of the trenches. These trenches still possess well preserved wooden structures and bunkers. There are two main segments of the trenches; upper and lower, separated by a road in between. There are also side arms for each segment of the trenches, mainly in the upper part.
Modeling the vestiges of wooden structures built along the trenches is one of the main focuses of this project. In a few locations, we found complete structures. In most other places, only wooden pillars, beams and rusty metal wires remained.
Though the bunkers are not our main focus, we did survey the bunker built at uppermost part of the trenches.
A series of caves is located close to the Ova Spin river. The cave that we are interested in was totally excavated in 1930s. In 2014, the cultural layers of the cave was analyzed and it turned out that these layers go back to the neolithic era. It was originally used as a shelter by fishermen and hunters. Modern fishermen sill use it, but not as often as earlier in history. The archaeological service documented the cave already and a 3D model was generated from photos in 2014. However, the exact coordinates are unknown. Hence, our goal is to generate a georeferenced, detailed 3D model of the cave.
